Quick Facts
Congregation of the Sisters of the Eucharistic Heart of Jesus
n The Congregation of the Sisters of the Eucharistic Heart of Jesus is a Religious Institute of women whose dedication to the love and service of God and their fellow women and men takes special inspiration from the Eucharistic Heart of Jesus
n January 18, 1943: The Institute was founded by Archbishop Leo Hale Taylor D.D. SMA of Blessed Memory ; then Archbishop of Lagos. The inspiration of founding a Religious Congregation came as a result of the lack of an indigenous Congregation in the Western part of Nigeria; the whole purpose of founding the Congregation is to have educated African Sisters who can be a great missionary power
n It started with five young women with the Novitiate and mother house at Abeokuta
n As a young Institute, our Founder requested the Sisters of Our Lady of Apostles (OLA) to help
with the formation, and administration of the Congregation
n The first novice mistress and Superior General was Rev. Mother Enda Barrett OLA. Subsequently,
other OLA Sisters administered the Congregation before the Institute became autonomous
n May 1943: It was erected as an Institute of Diocesan Right after receiving a nihil obstat from
Congregatio Pro Gentium Evangelizatione
n January 1946: Three of the pioneer members made their first religious profession of vows.
They were Mother Mary Michael Maxwell, Mother Mary Agnes Ogodi, and Mother Mary Emmanuel Ojo,
all of blessed memory
n 1946: The novitiate and Mother house were moved to Ibonwon, Lagos State
n October 27, 1965: Death of our Founder, Archbishop Leo Hale Taylor SMA
